What is a Real Estate Buyer's Agent?

A real estate buyer's agent represents the consumer who is purchasing the property in the real estate transaction. The buyer's agent works for the buyer client and has the client's best interest in mind throughout the entire real estate transaction process.

Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR)

To become an "Accredited Buyer Representative” (ABR) you must first meet specific criteria showing experience working with previous buyers and then take and pass an extensive training class. Not all agents are willing to make this commitment. Douglas has dedicated himself to keeping up to date on all aspects of Buyer Representation.

When looking for a home for sale in Gig Harbor, Silverdale, Bremerton or anywhere in Kitsap County including Naval Base Kitsap which includes Bangor or the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, use a trained real estate specialist who is keeping your best interest in mind.

For many years, it was common for all Gig Harbor area real estate agents to only represent the Seller of a property in Puget Sound. Even Real Estate agents who did not list the property for sale. This was called “sub-agency”. In those days, no one represented the interests of the “Buyer” in a Real Estate transaction, not even the Real Estate agent working with the Buyer to find a home near Bremerton, Silverdale or Poulsbo.

As you may conclude, real estate transactions favored the Seller in all cases… Finally, in the mid 90’s the Washington state legislature passed new laws allowing real estate agents who did not represent the seller to be a buyer advocate (Buyers agent). A great improvement for the Buyers.

The National Association of Realtors came up with a special designation called (ABR) Accredited Buyers Representative. Through special training, agents were trained on this new principle in real estate that was quite different from what they had been practicing for many years. Buyers & Sellers have very different needs in a real estate transaction.

Many agents, even today have not taken the special training offered by our National Association. In Washington State, by virtue of the new law, it is ‘assumed’ that if you are buying a property and working with an agent, that agent represents your interests… But are they trained to do so? Many are not.

If you look at my credentials, you will see I hold the ABR designation as well as several others. I was among the very first in the country to obtain the ABR designation. I’ve chosen to be the most highly trained and professional agent possible to assist my clients in the purchase of their homes.
